Here is my “journal” of use of the Mini-Skinner which I carried as an EDC.
20/06/07
1. Rides well on the belt – quite compact. Knife a bit stiff in the sheath after being put on the belt but that will wear in. BTW the sheath has a firesteel loop but I thought it was a bit much to carry a firesteel in an EDC so I put a pen in its place – nice urban touch.
2. I looked after my stomach first and used the MS to slice salami and cut flatbread for my lunch since it’s spinning day and the “girls” have gone to lunch at the pub. The MS worked well on the salami whether cutting thin or thick slices and IMO works better then the Mini North Star.
3. Cutting up “bubblewrap” for parcels – easy. If you have ever tried cutting a straight line in the wrap with a blunt or even not so blunt Knife you will know what it is like.
4. Cutting up box’s for parcels and packing – MS went well and sailed through the cardboard. The ultra-thin (for a Barkie) slices very well.
5. Cut half a dozen 1x12” strips of 1/8” leather for Knife testing – the MS did well and the tip address the cutting service at the right angle and using the finger hold the Knife was quite comfortable to use.
21/06/07
1. Opening Knife Parcels – oh what fun! The only problem was ended up with sticky stuff all over my nice new blade.
2. Lunchtime – cut up a whole chicken with ease.
3. On the farm – cutting twine on the haybales and cutting up stale bread rolls for the cow.
4. Back in the shop slitting old feed bags to use as covers – too easy.
5. Still recycling – I have a stack, a big stack, of the USPS A4 sized posting packets (the ones about the size of a ream of copy paper) and when I run out of filing space I’ll remodel them into archive boxes and trays. So that’s what I did today – I made 3 archive boxes (they need more cutting) and 3 trays. Unfortunately USPS have dropped the service so I’ll have to conserve what I still have.
22/06/07
1. More parcels to open incl., one with that nylon tape stretched around it.
2. Carol wanted a 6” x ½” peg for one of her weaving thingo’s with a point at one end so I sharpened a piece of dowel with the MS before finishing it off on the belt sander.
3. More bubble wrap and cardboard.
26/06/07
Yes! I know! I’m behind! After spending 2 days in bed over the weekend (why do we always get crook on the weekend?) and all day catching up yesterday I’m back to near normal.
1. The cow needed a new collar so I cut the required length from an old belt length I had, shaped the tip and skived the buckle end – the Mini Skinner makes a nice “Skiver”.
2. More Knife parcels to open.
3. A true kitchen test of the Mini Skinner I made a beef stew. Now I wouldn’t normally use my EDC for preparing a stew but it was a chance to give it good work out. The Mini Skinner proved to be better then I thought it would given it’s a small blade – maybe that’s wrong better to say “short” blade as its width certainly gives it depth. The MS just handled slicing a large onion given its size but quickly turned 4 porterhouse steaks into cubes. No problems with a large carrot – no splitting. Finally, it worked well cutting up large potatos even though I had to turn the extra big ones around to cut them in half.
4. Since I make my own business cards and don’t have a guillotine I have to resort to a ruler and a Knife – I cut up 5 sheets of A4 120gsm paper containing 15 cards to the page .
5. Cutting brown paper for wrapping parcels.
27-Jun-07
1. 3 Knife parcels to open – no Barkies!
2. A bit of a disaster – washing machine spill soaked into a carpet and since it’s the middle of winter and never going to dry I had to cut off 3’ x 8’. You guessed it the MS to the rescue.
28/06/07
Big day at the computer today so the only work my MS did was open a packet of pasta and my last bottle of Galway Port that was given to me by my recently deceased Old Mate.
29/06/07
1. Opening more Knife parcels.
2. Cutting up wrapping paper, bubblewrap and cardboard cartons for parcels.
3. Cutting up a roll of cloth for cleaning rags.
4. Cutting buckles off a stack of leather belts I bought from the “op” shop.
5. Slicing Salami for a snack.
30/06/07
Pretty tied up on the computer so didn’t really have much to do with the MS today.
1. Dispatched a few cartons by cutting them up for the recycling bin.
2. Cut up a whole chicken to be marinated.
That is the end of Day 7 – result I checked the edge against my arm hairs and it was still shaving. NB The Mini Skinner blade had not even been stropped on my jeans during the testing period.
Okay 1 final test – how would the MS go, after EDCing it for 7 days, cutting 3/8” manila rope.
Result = 1 clean slice not hesitation or grabbing.
Conclusion = to use the Aussie vernacular the Mini Skinner is “A bloody good Knife”.
NB I will pull all the posts together and place them in the Review Sub-forum.
The MS does make an impressive EDC but I am sure it would make a more impressive Small Game Knife (up to goats) and if I didn’t have my Huntsman I believe it would be my # 1 choice for such tasks.
